National Caregivers Month: Showing Support for Caregivers this November

Across Colorado, individuals depend on the care and compassion of others to maintain their quality of life. This is especially true for older adults who rely on aging services in Colorado to meet their daily needs.

Not only do caregivers support those in need, but they also play a critical role in promoting public health and safety. This November, we celebrate National Caregivers Month to show our support for caregivers everywhere.

Read on to learn a bit more about caregivers in Colorado and what you can do to support them this month.

Caregiving Defined

Caregiving is the provision of physical, emotional, and/or practical support to another person. This can be done professionally, but it is often done by friends or family members who need to be paid for their services. Professional caregivers are trained to provide care in a way that is safe and effective, but non-professional caregivers may have different training.

Caregivers often fill the role of advocate for their care recipients. They may speak up on their behalf when they cannot do so themselves. They may also provide support and guidance to help their loved ones make decisions about their care.

Many caregivers also provide essential emotional support to those in their care. This can be a necessary service for those dealing with chronic or terminal illnesses and those aging and experiencing the many changes that come with this stage of life.

Caregiving can be demanding, and caregivers often have to make sacrifices to fulfill their responsibilities. This is why it is so important that we show our support for caregivers during National Caregivers Month.

What is National Family Caregivers Month?

National Family Caregivers Month is an annual event that takes place every November. It’s a time to celebrate and support family caregivers across the country – those unsung heroes who care for their loved ones daily.

The 2022 theme is “#CaregiverAnd,” which emphasizes the importance of caregiving as a team effort. The work of a caregiver can often feel isolating, but it doesn’t have to be that way. There is strength in numbers, and by coming together, we can lighten the load and make the journey a little bit easier.

How Can I Show My Support to Caregivers?

To indeed be a #CaregiverAnd community, we must all do our part to support caregivers. Here are a few suggestions on how we can support aging services in colorado through caregiving:

Educate yourself about caregiving. There is a lot to learn, and the more you know, the better equipped you’ll be to support those in your life who are shouldering this responsibility.

Make yourself available. Let your loved ones know you’re there for them and willing to help out however you can.

Respect their decisions. It can be challenging to watch someone we love struggle, but it’s important to remember that caregivers know what’s best for their care recipients. Unless they are in danger, respect their decisions and allow them to care for their loved ones how they see fit.

Give them a break. Caregiving can be exhausting, both physically and emotionally. So offer to take over for a few hours so your loved one can have a much-needed break.

Listen and learn. One of the best things you can do is listen to what caregivers say. They may not want your help, but they will appreciate being heard.

Saying “thank you” goes a long way. A simple “thank you” can go a long way in showing your support for caregivers. Let them know that you see the sacrifices they’re making and that you appreciate everything they do.
