Fall is a time of change, and for those on Medicare, it also signifies the approach of the Annual Election Period—commonly known as Fall Open Enrollment.

This is the time to review, switch, or enroll in various Medicare plans. With the maze of options available, making informed decisions is critical. Below are six pivotal points to consider and some essential details on Medicare.

Close up of man signing a paper with a fountain pen

What To Know About Fall Open Enrollment

1. Timing is Everything

The Annual Election Period starts on October 15th and ends on December 7th each year. Any changes made will take effect on January 1st of the following year. For most, this is the only time you can switch between Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Part D (drug) plans.

2. Review Current Coverage

If you’re on Original Medicare, consult the upcoming year’s ‘Medicare & You’ handbook to understand costs and benefits. For those on Medicare Advantage or a Part D plan, you should receive an Annual Notice of Change or Evidence of Coverage. Even if you are satisfied with your current coverage, comparing other plans may reveal a better fit for your needs.

3. Help is Available

Tools like Medicare’s Plan Finder can assist in comparing Part D plans while calling 1-800-MEDICARE can provide information about Medicare Advantage Plans in your area. Jonnah Glassman runs our local State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) and she and our certified SHIP volunteers are a fantastic resource for personalized assistance.

If you have questions or concerns about Medicare, or want to learn more about your Medicare benefits or see if you’re eligible for the Medicare Savings Program, contact us at (970) 315-1328.

4. Enrollment through Medicare

Enroll in a new drug plan by calling 1-800-MEDICARE. Document all details of your enrollment conversation for future reference. Confirm all plan specifics before making the switch.

5. A Second Chance: Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period

If dissatisfaction occurs with a new Medicare Advantage Plan, a second chance for change is available from January 1 through March 31. This is helpful for those who are unhappy with their plan choice or if circumstances have changed.

6. Don’t Confuse It with Federal Marketplaces

Fall Open Enrollment is specific to Medicare. Federal Marketplaces for the uninsured or underinsured have a different enrollment period and are not intended for those already on Medicare. This can lead to confusion, so it’s important to understand the differences between these two plans.

7. Staying Informed

Sign up for alerts from Medicare and other health care organizations that provide updates on changes in coverage options, deadlines, and more. It is also a good idea to review your plan annually and monitor any changes in coverage or costs!

May is a very special month for older adults living in the United States. Why? Because this is when we celebrate Older Americans Month (OAM), led by the Administration for Community Living. The theme for May 2023 is Aging Unbound, which provides a great opportunity to recognize the breadth of experiences that older adults possess. It’s also a great time to examine aging stereotypes.

Did you know that the terms “senior,” “elderly,” and “old people” can promote mental images of older adults as being less competent and valued in their community? That’s why Vintage uses the term “older adults” as much as possible. It better reflects the range of aging experiences across the aging spectrum from 60-100+.

This year, the theme of Aging Unbound challenges us to look at aging in a new way. Rather than viewing this stage of life as one of frailty and loss, Aging Unbound encourages us to celebrate the diversity of the aging experience.

And in an effort to help connect you with the Older Americans Month cause, here are some suggestions on how to get involved with the older adults in your life!

10 Ways You Can Make Older Americans Month Special In 2023

1. Volunteer at a local senior center or long-term care facility (aka nursing homes:) Visit and spend time with the older adults in your community. You can organize fun activities, such as crafts, games, and storytelling, or just pop in for a chat. Have a hobby you love? These are great places to find other passionate experts to level up your hobby.

2. Conduct an oral history project: Older adults have rich personal and historical experiences that we can learn from. Consider interviewing the elders in your family, neighborhood, or community and producing an oral history project that can be shared with others.

3. Share your skills and talents with older adults: Everyone has unique talents and skills. For example, you can teach computer skills, help them write their memoirs, or create a garden therapy program.

4. Organize an intergenerational event: Create opportunities to engage individuals across the generational spectrum. Plan intergenerational activities, such as a field trip, storytelling, or concerts that bring people together in a meaningful way.

5. Conduct a friendly visit: Social isolation is as deadly as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. A simple visit can go a long way in making socially isolated older adults feel less alone. You can make a call or send a card, flowers, or a small gift to show your appreciation and care.

6. Host a dinner or potluck: Consider having an old-fashioned dinner or potluck with your friends and family members. Sharing delicious food and memories can be a great way to celebrate Older Americans Month.

7. Sponsor an older adult for a day: You can make someone feel special by sponsoring a trip to their favorite spot, such as a museum, park, or historical site. For individuals on a fixed income, outings like these can be an unaffordable luxury. A sponsored adventure can go a long way to help isolated older adults reconnect with their community.

Winter can be tough for older adults on a fixed income. Learn how the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) in Colorado can help.

As the temperatures drop across Colorado, it becomes increasingly essential for all of us to start preparing our homes for the winter months.

This can be an incredibly challenging endeavor for older adults living on a fixed income, as they may need more financial resources to weatherize their homes adequately. Fortunately, there is help available: the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP).

For older adults in Colorado, WAP programs offer financial assistance that can help to improve the energy efficiency of their homes, providing improved comfort and peace of mind. In addition, the program covers materials and labor costs for certain home improvements, such as air sealing, insulation installation, replacement windows, and more.

Additionally, WAP programs often include a “Healthy Home” component which can provide additional assistance such as safety inspections, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, repairs to heating systems, and other measures designed to ensure a safe living environment.

What WAP Programs Are Available in Colorado?

In Colorado, WAP programs are administered by local governments and non-profit organizations. Eligibility requirements vary from county to county but generally include income eligibility requirements. To find out if you qualify for a program in your area, contact your local Area Agency on Aging (AAA).

Here are some WAP programs you may want to check out for yourself or someone you know:

1. NWCCOG’s Energy Program

The Northwest Colorado Council of Governments’ Energy Program is a weatherization program serving 13 counties in northwest Colorado.

The program offers eligible participants free energy audits and other services, including insulation improvements, ventilation upgrades, and more. Contact NWCCOG for more information about eligibility and program details.

2. Colorado’s Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP)

LEAP offers financial assistance to help eligible low-income households with their energy bills during the winter months.

LEAP helps families and individuals access weatherization services, including insulation installation and energy efficiency measures. Eligible residents can receive a $250 – $1000 credit to offset heating bill costs and WAP services such as weatherization and energy efficiency measures.

3. Colorado Office of Energy Weatherization Assistance Program

The Colorado Office of Energy provides financial assistance to help low-income households weatherize their homes. Eligible households can find a list of contacts for their specific area on the office’s website and other information about the program and its services.

Help Keep Colorado older adults Safe this Winter.

By taking advantage of these programs, older adults in Colorado can stay warm and safe during the winter months. With assistance from WAP programs like those highlighted above, everyone can feel secure in their home throughout the winter season.

For more information about WAP programs for older adults in Colorado, visit the links above. You can also visit Vintage online to find more resources for older adults in Colorado and programs that can help them stay independent and safe in their homes.

Contact the Weatherization Assistance Program for further questions regarding WAP programs. They will be able to provide you with more information about eligibility requirements and program details. With the proper assistance, older adults in Colorado can enjoy a warm and safe winter season.

Mental Health and The Holidays for Older Adults + Caregivers

The holidays can be a difficult time for older adults and their caregivers. With so much going on – from gatherings to travel and shopping – it can be easy to forget the needs of those we love. As a caregiver, holiday planning can often become overwhelming. And with shorter days and colder weather, it can be difficult for older adults to stay active and connected.

Whether you are a caregiver or care for an elderly relative, here are some tips on how to make the holidays unique, memorable, and, most of all, relaxing!

1. Remember that the best gifts are more than just presents.

Quality time is often more precious than gifts. Take time out of your holiday hustle and bustle to spend with your loved one. A simple game of cards or a conversation can be meaningful and enjoyable.

For example, consider writing down favorite memories or stories from years past. This can bring back good feelings and create a sense of connection. Or if you want to get out of the house, take a walk in the park or a drive to look at holiday lights.

2. Involve your loved one in holiday planning.

Encourage your loved one to share their ideas for making the holidays special. This can help keep them engaged and give them a sense of purpose and control.

For example, they may have a favorite holiday treat you could make together or a unique ornament for the tree with sentimental value. Or perhaps it’s something as simple as having their favorite holiday movie playing in the background while everyone gathers around for dinner.

3. Make safety and comfort a priority.

The holidays can be a hectic and busy time, so it’s essential to take steps to ensure your loved one feels safe and comfortable.

Consider ways to make the home environment more accessible, like adding extra lighting or handrails in hallways or bathrooms. Be sure to discuss any special needs they may have with family and friends who will be visiting. Also, stock up on essential items like medications so that running out or having a lapse in care won’t become an issue.

4. Find ways to stay connected.

Staying socially connected and engaged is an important part of staying healthy for older adults. Consider ways to help your loved one maintain relationships with family, friends, and community members over the holidays.

For example, if you can’t travel to see them in person, arrange a video call or consider sending care packages filled with special items. You can also look for nearby events or activities to attend together, like a holiday concert or play.

Make This A Holiday To Remember & Cherish

The holidays are a time for traditions and memories to be made. But they can quickly become stressful and overwhelming for caregivers and older adults. By taking a few extra steps to accommodate their needs and focus on quality time, you can make the holidays special for everyone involved.

Remember that the best gifts are often more about spending time together than presents. Make safety a priority, involve your loved one in holiday planning, and find ways to stay connected with family and friends. That way, older adults can enjoy the holidays and make lasting memories that will be cherished for years.

With the right tips, you can head into the new year knowing that you made the holidays special for the older adult in your life. At Vintage, we are committed to providing Colorado seniors with the best resources year-round.

From connecting you to senior adult resources to helping you with meal plans and senior living options, we are here to help. Contact us today to learn more!
